Canadian institutional investors and financial services organizations returned to the cryptocurrency field in 2023, as the industry rebounded from turbulent times, the market rebounded, regulatory transparency increased, and digital assets added new ones.

According to a biennial survey conducted by KPMG in Canada and the Canadian Alternative Investment Strategies Association (CAASA), financial services institutions providing cryptocurrency products and services to clients increased by 22% compared to 2021, and institutional investors incorporating cryptocurrency into their portfolios increased by 26% last year. The survey collected feedback from financial services organizations and institutional investors operating in Canada.

Half of the respondents in the financial services industry said their organizations are actively providing at least one type of cryptocurrency product or service to clients, up from 41% in 2021. Among institutional investors, nearly a quarter (39%) reported direct or indirect investment in cryptocurrency, up from 31% in 2021.

"The last time we conducted this survey was in 2021, which was a strong year for cryptocurrency assets. The following year was turbulent, with major cryptocurrency trading companies experiencing fraud and collapse, but these events have had a purifying effect on the industry," said Kunal Bhasin, Partner and Co-Leader of KPMG's Canadian Digital Asset Business.

Our survey results indicate that cryptocurrency assets are increasingly receiving attention as an alternative asset class available for investment among institutional investors and financial services organizations in Canada," Mr. Bhasin added.

Kareem Sadek, Co-Director of Emerging Technology Risk and Co-Director of KPMG's Digital Asset Business, added: "Canada has taken a leading role in creating a regulatory environment supportive of cryptocurrency innovation, from approving the first Bitcoin and Ethereum exchange-traded funds to allowing complex strategies involving derivatives and Ethereum staking, and the rise in cryptocurrency prices may be a reason why institutional investors are increasingly attracted to the cryptocurrency space."
