人人都在聊元宇宙,人人都在想元宇宙到底是个什么玩意儿。

Everyone's talking about the meta-cosmos. Everyone's thinking about what the meta-cosmos is.

如果聊定义的话其实很简单,早在上世纪,元宇宙(Metaverse)的概念就已经被提出来了。

If it's easy to talk about definitions, as early as the last century, the concept of the Metaverse was introduced.

看名字就知道,Meta(超越)和Verse(宇宙)嘛,简单说就是个超现实的虚拟世界。

You can tell by name that Meta and Verse are, in short, a super-real virtual world.

这个概念原型最早源于美国数学家和计算机专家弗诺·文奇,他在1981年出版的小说《真名实姓》中,创造性地构思了一个通过脑机接口进入并获得感官体验的虚拟世界。

The original version of the concept originated with the American mathematician and computer expert Vernor Vinch, who creatively conceived a virtual world that entered and gained sensory experience through brain interfaces in his novel Real Name, published in 1981.

之后在1992年,由尼尔·史蒂文森创作的赛博朋克科幻小说《雪崩》中也创作了一个庞大的虚拟现实世界,人们用数字化身来控制,并相互竞争以提高自己的地位。

Then, in 1992, a huge virtual reality world was created by the Sybonpunk fiction " Avalanche ", written by Neil Stevenson, where people controlled digitally and competed with each other to improve their position.

拿今年几乎被元宇宙概念捆绑的老电影《头号玩家》来举例,电影里的“绿洲”是比较接近元宇宙的形态。现实的人通过科技手段进入虚拟世界,享受第二人生。

The mature metacosystem is conceptualized under new technologies such as expanding reality, block chains, cloud computing, digital twins, and its development is closely linked to AR, VR, 3D, and advanced web-based information technology. Its ultimate shape is the creation of a virtual reality system that is closely connected to the outside but is independent in space; it covers everything that is real, but there are products that go beyond reality, that can be connected and recorded in every way, and that lasts forever.

在如同韭菜涨势一般迅猛的宣传攻势下,元宇宙在今年用上述结合了十分具体的技术,但又有些让人摸不清具体方向的说法,轰炸了我们每个人的社交媒体首页。

In the midst of an aggressive propaganda campaign, such as a rise in pickles, the Yuan cosmos this year bombed the social media front pages of each of us, using the very specific combination of the techniques described above, but with some obfuscation of the specific direction.

在脸书改名、张家界筹备成立“元宇宙研究中心”等海量消息之中,唯一让我们UCG这帮游戏佬热烈讨论的,是《仙剑》的元宇宙计划。

Among the big stories about Facebook renaming and Zhang's preparations for the establishment of the Centre for the Study of the Metacosm, the only thing that has allowed us, the UCG players, to engage in a lively discussion is the Metacosm of the Sword.

面对这个开场总喜欢拿《头号玩家》举例,但聊深了就越来越让玩家摸不着头脑的,又新又旧的奇妙概念,玩家们究竟是如何看待的呢?

我决定当场成立UCG元宇宙研究中心,拉上几位同事,听听他们的看法。

虽然说起来有些情绪化,但“元宇宙”这玩意确实有些令我恼火。听网上那些大佬讲元宇宙,就总感觉自己回到了高数课堂:

我听懂了每一个概念,每一条理论,但合起来还是不理解他们到底要干什么,和我要干什么。

你看今年炒作的“元宇宙”也是画圆,还具体了一点,是张好大好圆的饼。

说实话,如果真的能有《头号玩家》“绿洲”那样的世界,作为一个玩家肯定是十分乐意的。

To be honest, if there was a world like Oasis for Player One, as a player, it would be a pleasure to be a player.

只不过,就算真做出来了这样的游戏,游戏公司不让你下线怎么办?AI诞生自我意识要支配人类怎么办?虚拟空间影响到现实世界怎么办?

It's just, even if it's a game like this, what if the game company doesn't let you off the line? What if AI's self-conscious about being born dominates mankind? What if virtual space affects the real world?

额......这或许确实是有些远了,但要是真能发生,那更酷了!

元宇宙这个概念虽然还处于遥不可及的构想阶段,但是VR游戏领域近两年的发展与技术支持却逐渐攀高,至少现在一台还不错的VR设备已经不再过于昂贵。

While the concept of the meta-cosmos is still at a distant conceptual stage, the development and technical support in the VR field has been increasing over the past two years, and at least one of the relatively good VR equipment is no longer too expensive.

不过要想真的进入大家都在虚拟的世界里进行社交活动和工作的话,至少还得等上一段时间。

But it will take at least a while to get into the virtual world where everyone is socializing and working.

个人的看法更倾向于元宇宙类的虚拟社群会在科技发展到一定的程度后,渐渐地成为我们生活的一部分。

A virtual community in the meta-cosm category is more inclined by the individual's perspective to become part of our lives as technology evolves to a certain extent.

毕竟现实空间的环境与资源是有限的,除了上天入地,探索并在电子世界中为自己造出一片“世外桃源”,或许也是一个不错的选择。

After all, the environment and resources of real space are limited, and it may be a good option to explore and create for itself an “out-of-the-world source” in the electronic world, in addition to the sky.

总而言之,如果可以让自己的意识进入游戏世界里,听起来确实很让人感到跃跃欲试。

In short, it does sound like a great leap forward if one can get his consciousness into the world of games.

因为之前对VR特别关注过,所以说元宇宙的概念中有很多完全不陌生,比如虚拟现实社交,以及虚拟现实平台交流。

Because of the special attention given to VR before, the concept of the meta-cosmos has many aspects that are not new at all, such as virtual reality socialization and virtual reality platform exchange.

前些年还有过通过VR远程演示而成功指导手术这样从虚拟延伸至现实的交互案例——这其实也是元宇宙与完全沉浸入虚拟世界的VR娱乐的最大不同。

There have also been interactive cases in previous years that have successfully directed surgery through VR remote demonstrations, from virtual to reality -- and this is actually the biggest difference between meta-cosmos and VR entertainment that is completely immersed in the virtual world.

当然元宇宙不只有VR,某种程度上元宇宙和VR有一定交集。事实上虚拟与现实交互在互联网普及后就一直在发生:

更熟悉的还有扎克伯格发起、资本一拥而上跟进的场面,和五年前的VR元年太像了,虽说逐利是资本的天然属性,但还是希望这波热度随着资本变现离场而褪去后,能少牺牲一些底层的创业者和打工人。

另外,总被提起的《头号玩家》虽然是典型的爽文套路,但主角通过在虚拟世界的冒险而在现实世界成为人生赢家,也是挺符合“元宇宙”的虚拟与现实交互特点的。

经济萧条,民生凋敝,包括主人公在内的民众大多生活在破败的贫民窟里,靠在“绿洲”中打拼来暂时忘却现实。

The economic downturn, the livelihood of the people, and the majority of the population, including the masters, live in broken slums, resting on “Oasis” to forget reality for the time being.

在新冠疫情肆虐,全球经济衰退,大家的出行和社交也受到很大影响的背景下,资本开始强推“元宇宙”并非偶然。

It is no accident that capital began to push the meta-cosmos against the backdrop of the new crown epidemic, the global recession, and the impact on people's mobility and socialization.

起码就我自己来说会抱着一个谨慎看待的态度,不管资本把它吹得多么天花乱坠,努力工作,过好自己的现实生活才是第一位的。

眼下根本没有人能真正打造出一个“元宇宙”,就算我不会制冷,我也可以根据我的使用体验去评价一款冰箱。

No one can really build a meta-cosmos right now, and even if I don't cool, I can evaluate a refrigerator based on my experience.

但要我去评论一个摸不着、看不见、完全体验不到的东西,这就有些难为人了。

But it is difficult for me to comment on something that cannot be touched, can not be seen and can not be experienced at all.

大咖们口中的“元宇宙”实际上离我们还都有点遥远——扎克伯格在谈论让脸书转型向元宇宙公司时,用的都是“五年”、“七年”这样词语。

“元宇宙”作为一个新概念,要想靠现在的科技水平来达成并且普及,还需要很长一段时间。

As a new concept, it will take a long time to achieve and universalize with the current level of technology.

而游戏作为一个历史也没多悠久的行业,电影《头号玩家》里的“绿洲”要想诞生大概会需要更长时间。除了硬件问题以外,玩家的接受能力也是一个问题。

And the game is not a business that has a long history, and the Oasis in the film Player One will probably take longer to be born. Besides the hardware problem, the player's acceptance is also a problem.

举个很简单的例子,VR技术也普及了一段时间了,但VR游戏的普及率依旧很低。玩家常开玩笑说期待“脑后插管”,但终究只是说说而已。

To give a simple example, VR technology has been popular for some time, but VR games are still very low. Players often joke about expecting a “brain intubation”, but ultimately they're just talking.

对于大部分有接触过科幻概念的正常人来说,“元宇宙”是个很多余的词汇,我们能找到成吨的替代说法:

For most normal people who have been exposed to the concept of science fiction, the term "megaspace" is a superfluous term, and we can find an alternative to a ton:

第二人生、网络世界、矩阵空间以及其他更多乱七八糟的名字。

The second life, the cyberworld, the matrix space and other more confusing names.

内核无非都是创造一个独立于现实世界之外的完整虚拟世界,人们可以在其中拥有属于自己的虚拟形象,并进行各种各样的娱乐活动。

The kernel is all about creating a complete virtual world, independent of the real world, in which people can have their own virtual image and engage in a variety of recreational activities.

然而就这么一个简单但又完全超出现有技术水平的概念,一旦被投机者们盯上,就成了一块灰色地带金融行为的遮羞布。

However, such a simple, yet completely outmoded, concept, once targeted by speculators, becomes a veil of grey zone financial behaviour.

而因为元宇宙所需要的配套设施里和之前基本被用于如此用途的几个概念还存在着联系,现在简直变成了一个类似于“肯德基全家桶”一样的“商业概念同捆包”。

And because there is still a link between the supporting facilities required by the metacosystem and the concepts that were largely used for this purpose, it is now a mere “business concept with a bundle” similar to the “Kenderki family bucket”.

什么VR、NFT、比特币和区块链之类的,甭管是新是老,都往元宇宙里面一塞,配上一通似是而非,看似高大上实际上不说人话的所谓介绍,又能拿出来吸引投资者眼球。

VRs, NFTs, Bitcoin and block chains, regardless of whether they are new or old, are plugged into the meta-cosmos, accompanied by what appears to be, rather than, a high-sized, virtually unspoken introduction that attracts investors' eyes.

可以想象,如此一来,到底什么是元宇宙已经和这个词的原意没啥关系了,我甚至有幸见到过一款被我们商务小姐姐称为“配色很元宇宙”的潮牌装饰品手柄,差点让我当场气急攻心原地去世。

As you can imagine, what has become of the word has nothing to do with it, and I've even had the privilege of seeing a tidal decorative handle that our little business sister has called "the colorful universe" that almost killed me in the air.

所以如果大家还不知道元宇宙是什么,个人强烈建议不要去了解,听进去一个字你就输了!

So if you don't know what the Yuan cosmos is, you're strongly advised not to understand. Listen to a word and you lose!

说实话我完全没懂现在所说的元宇宙到底是什么,只是很模糊的知道大概就是“以高新技术创造出一个媲美真实世界的虚拟世界”这么一个概念(我甚至不敢确定这个概念是否正确)。

To be honest, I have no idea what the meta-cosmos is called, but it's vague to know that it's probably a concept of “making a virtual world comparable to the real world with high-tech technology” (I'm not even sure if it's true).

若当真如此,而这个技术有朝一日又有可能应用到游戏领域的话,我在条件允许的情况下还是很乐意去尝试的——毕竟,那个玩家没做过“进入游戏世界”的梦是吧。

If that were true, and the technology could one day be applied to the field of games, I would be happy to try it if conditions allowed — after all, the player had never had a dream of “entering the world of games”.

不过从目前的人类科技来说,想要接造出成熟的“元宇宙”还有点为时尚早。但说不定现在各大国的地下研究机关,早已在民众不知道的情况下,研究出了足以改变人类历史的虚拟现实科技!那样似乎也挺浪漫啊。

But it is a bit premature to try to create a mature “mass universe” from current human science and technology. But perhaps the underground research institutions of the major powers have developed virtual real technologies that can change the history of humankind long before people know it.

不过说到底,我这个关于“元宇宙”的认知到底对不对……

But at the end of the day, is it true that my understanding of the "megaspace"?

话虽如此,我还是希望能在一个相对安全的情况下进入“游戏世界”,而不是像图中这样……(苦笑)
