On May 12, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) firmly rejected the application of Coinbase, the crypto-currency exchange, accusing it of trying to influence the proceedings by misinterpreting key issues. In a paper submitted to the court, SEC strongly criticized Coinbase’s dissatisfaction with the Howey test and the existing regulatory framework for securities, stressing that Coinbase could not complain about legal consequences because its business model was inconsistent with the rules of law.
